The Fourth of July

A memorable day on which the new SACBF Constitution was approved, and (at the AGM) a new Executive Committee was elected.

Your new EC is:

Chair
Carina Diedericks-Hugo

Secretary
Yvette Couperthwaite (assisted by Anne Milton as Membership Secretary)

Treasurer to be announced, but possibly Ed Coombe

Committee
Lona Gericke (assisted by Veronica Behm), Kathy Madlener (assisted by Carol Ryan), Robin Malan, Inge Paulsen, Maritha Snyman, Thomas van der Walt.

It is a sign of growth and strength in the SACBF that we had more people wanting to be on the committee than could be accepted. As previously announced, portfolios for EC members will be discussed and allocated at the first Executive meeting.

The office at Huis der Nederlanden, Pinelands will certainly continue until the end of 2005. It is open normally on Tuesdays from 10 am to 1 pm and visitors will be welcomed by Yvette and Anne (and treated to a cup of the finest coffee in Cape Town!).

Winner of SACBF Vivian Wilkes Award 2004

The latest ‘Vivi’ winner is Niki Daly for his Karoo-flavoured picture-book ONCE UPON A TIME (published by Tafelberg).

29th IBBY World Congress

By all accounts, this was a huge success, welcoming 590 delegates from 68 different countries. Here are some of the comments received so far:

  • Congratulations! What a superb Congress it was – inspiring, stimulating, thought-provoking and fun too! [P.H. – South Africa]
  • Thank you for one of the most stimulating and engaging conferences I have ever attended. You have started a revolution. We all want to go get books and read to children. [B.C. – USA]
  • Thank you for a wonderful Congress. I found all the session I attended extremely informative and most beneficial. The organization of the transport by members of Legend Tourism was outstanding. The food, all the exhibits at the Baxter and the accommodation suggested … all of a high standard. [D.J. – South Africa]
  • Thank you very much for the super splendid Congress! Cape Town was so more beautiful and good feeling than I had thought. [N.T. – Japan]
  • Thank you for organizing such a wonderful tour … I am quite convinced that the people of the rainbow nation are working together in close co-operation for the improvement of social and economic life for all. [A.R. – Netherlands]
  • [Of the conferees] some high fraction had experiences that somehow will change their lives. I contemplate how their new energy and enthusiasm will touch others, and conclude that you indeed did touch the lives of many children in Africa and beyond. [K.B. – USA]

SACBF Membership

There is now a national membership list administered by our office in Pinelands, Cape Town. Membership (of the SACBF and IBBY combined) costs R75 per person. The membership year starts on 1 January. It is possible to pay a half year’s membership costing R40 (starting either from 1 January or 1 July). For us, it is easier if you send a cheque for the full amount, with your name, address and e-mail, to SACBF, PO Box 847, Howard Place 7450. Alternatively, pay the amount in to our cheque account at First National Bank, Claremont, Cape Town – account number 52311041801 – branch code 200109 – and inform us by post or e-mail that you have done so.
