IBBY SA is one of more than 70 country representatives of the International Board on Books for Young People, a non-profit organization committed to bringing books and children together.
Founded shortly after World War Two, IBBY aims to promote international understanding through children’s books. IBBY encourages the publishing and distribution of quality children’s books and works to ensure that young people throughout the world have access to these. IBBY is committed to protect and uphold the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, in particular, a child’s right to education and direct access to information.
IBBY SA collaborates with a number of organisations on a variety of projects including those aimed at literacy, libraries and the promotion of South African books for children and young people and is responsible for the selection of exemplary books and the nomination of talented South African writers and illustrators for several local and international awards.
